Winter is coming early with snow and very cold temperatures across most of United States. If you dress properly and check the weather, running the winter can be enjoyable. I know some runners will say I am crazy. As I am running today, I am thinking what new runners need to know to survive the winter. First thing before heading out the door or planning your running week, check the weather. This weekend’s forecast for New England is bitter cold Saturday and snowstorm Sunday. The group weekend run will be Saturday at 11 am which will warm up to 15 degrees. We will run 6-8 miles. Once the streets and sidewalks have snow and ice, be cautious running in the dark which you might opt for the treadmill. Need to run outside then wear head lamp and reflector vest. Don’t expect speed with slick conditions but keep kick (feet) low to the surface. Some runners run with Yaktrax on their running shoes and/or trail running shoes. If you need to run outside in the extreme cold, dress in layers from head to toe. Do a shorter loop. Try snow shoe running or cross country skiing on the trails.
Be smart and plan ahead, you will be enjoying running this winter.
