Training Like a Fish

Half Ironman training is still happening. Last weekend, it was our first major heat since August last year. It kind cut short the long bike but not all the training. Tuesday was my first open water swim which felt great. KT and I did a mile at 70% effort. She is training for Lake Placid Ironman.

Speaking of last Tuesday’s open water swim. 7 am starts Tuesday’s class. The rain stopped 5 minutes before class started. Got kayak off car and in the water. 2 did the mile swim. The other 2 are first timers which I stayed with them. When KT and May Lee got back from their mile, I went got my wetsuit on which she watched them swim. I came down, told them to keep swimming by shoreline and it will get easier doing open water swim. As soon as I put my head in the water and started swimming. KT and I swam a short distance, which KT turn to the beach and saw the 2 get of the lake quickly. One even went to gym pool to swim.

Sometimes we forget the newbies need a little more time to get use to the open water swimming concept. I know the season veterans will tell you, the more you swim the open water swim, the easier it gets. Persistence you will win.

  1. Know exactly what you mean! I just had my third ever OWS ever and I’m feeling a tiny little bit more comfortable then before. Guess persistence is indeed key! :’)

    1. Focus on sighting ahead which removes the thinking what lurks below you. Lake Gardner has weeds and some fish but none ever bitten me in the last 10 years at this lake. It will become second nature after awhile.
