Today is a bittersweet day for me. Thursday was dad’s birthday and today is Father’s day. Even though he died 9 years ago, I always go through melancholy about him at this time. He was always serious but funny. He has done the darn-est (funny) things that they were written in Reader’s Digest. The best part he always supported me with all my sports and races. He drove around when I did the New York state marathon until I had to drop out because I got frost bite to my hands. I was the athlete in the family, my brother had 2 left feet and always got into trouble. He loved to swim and sail which we shared. Only regret is I never got my scuba diving license to do that with him.
One race I did/ran 8 times for him was the Mount Washington Road Race. It was our special connection. In the 50s, he did wind tunnel test on the top in the middle of winter on top of the mountain. Our family has gone to the top a couple times, which he tell my brother and me stories about how they had to be clip into the line so he wouldn’t blow away. Today, there is a new building on the top compare to wooden buildings in the past. The last time I did the road race was in 2006, a year after he died on my birthday which spread some of his ashes off Tukerman’s Ravine.
Next weekend is The Mount Washington Road Race which I wish all participating good luck. I wish all dads a Happy Father’s Day including you dad.
